Dr.
Theodore Millon identified
four different subtypes of “Borderline
Personality Disorder”,
which correspond well with Dr.
Christine Ann Lawson's
four borderline subtypes from her book, “Understanding
The Borderline Mother: Helping Her Children Transcend The Intense,
Unpredictable, and Volatile Relationship”.
While persons with BPD are individuals they tend to favor one
subtype; but there are a proportion of those with BPD that may have
overlapping traits from the differing subtypes; depending on exactly
how disordered they are in character and how far along the spectrum
they are towards malignancy.
The main distinction seems to be between “borderlines” who are mostly lower-functioning and “inward-acting” and with those who are mostly higher-functioning and “outward-acting”. A proportion of sufferers with “borderline personality disorder” may have a combination of both styles and “act-out” as well as “acting-in” on themselves. “Quiet borderlines” lean towards being “inward-acting” but higher-functioning.
High-Functioning and Low-Functioning: http://outofthefog.website/other-articles/2015/12/12/high-functioning-and-low-functioning
___________________________________________________________
Typically “Inward-Acting” - “NEUROTIC” BORDERLINE TYPE - Depressive Anaclitic Type (mostly Lower-Functioning Conventional “Classic Borderlines” or Higher-Functioning Unconventional “Quiet Borderlines”) but in a proportion of those who are typically Lower-Functioning they may also have a combination of both Lower-Functioning & Higher-Functioning “Classic Borderline” characteristics.
The
Discouraged Borderline
(The “fearful”
subtype) (“The
Hermit”,
The defining characteristic of this type of borderline is acting
“fearful”)
- Avoidant, “Melancholic” Depressive or Dependent features.
Pliant, submissive, humble, feels vulnerable or in constant jeopardy;
feels hopeless, depressed, helpless, and powerless.
Discouraged
Borderlines (Hermits) tend
to be clingy, go along with the crowd, and walk around feeling somber
and dejected. Deep inside, they are often angry and disappointed with
others. While their anger can explode outwards, they are much more
likely to do harm to themselves by self-mutilating or even by feeling
suicidal or by threatening suicide. This subtype may have traits of
“dependent
personality disorder”,
“avoidant
personality disorder”
and/or
“depressive
personality disorder” or
the disorder/s as co-occurring diagnosis.
Discouraged Borderlines (Hermits) operate in “Abandoned Child schema mode”, believing themselves unworthy of love and affection, and behaving accordingly.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The
Self-Destructive Borderline
(The “vulnerable”
subtype) (“The
Waif”,
The defining characteristic of this type of borderline is acting
“helpless”)
- “Melancholic” Depressive or Masochistic features. Inward
turning; intropunitively angry: conforming, deferential, and
ingratiating behaviors have deteriorated; increasingly high-strung
and moody.
The
Self-Destructive Borderline (Waif) is
marked by a constant sense of bitterness turned inward. Their levels
of self-hatred can often reach monumental proportions, leading them
into all types of conscious and unconscious self-destructive
behaviors, ranging from poor healthcare and hygiene to reckless
driving to performing humiliating sexual acts. They often suffer from
depression as a co-occurring diagnosis and are often self-injurers.
They “need” someone to save them, but ultimately refuse
assistance because helplessness feels safe. This subtype may have
traits of “self-defeating
personality disorder”
and/or
“depressive
personality disorder” as
co-occurring diagnosis.
This
type operates in an “Abandoned
Child schema mode”.
Since he or she does not feel loved, he or she reacts in
self-destructive ways in an attempt to feel something instead of
nothing.
___________________________________________________________
Typically
“Outward-Acting”
- “PSYCHOTIC”
IMPULSIVE TYPE -
Narcissistic “Arrogant/Entitled” Type or “Depressed/Depleted”
Type | Antisocial “Aggressive” Type or “Passive/Parasitic”
Type (mostly “Higher-Functioning”
Invisible Borderlines) - “Classic
Borderline”
- Typically a “High
Conflict Personality”
The Petulant Borderline (The “narcissistic” subtype) (“The Queen”, The defining characteristic of this type of borderline is acting “controlling”) - “Negativistic” Passive-Aggressive features. Impatient, restless, stubborn, defiant, sullen, pessimistic, resentful; easily slighted and quickly disillusioned.
The
Petulant Borderline (Queen) is
torn between relying upon people and at the same time keeping their
distance for fear of disappointment. They vacillate between feelings
of “unworthiness” and “anger”. This “anger” can be quite
explosive, reminiscent of “narcissistic rage” or even
“Intermittent explosive disorder”.
The
Petulant Borderline (Queen) operates
in an “Angry
Child schema mode”.
He or she is angry and will hurt friends and family as a result. He
or she often does not recognize the anger - the world is the problem,
not them. This subtype has traits of “passive-aggressive
personality disorder” and
may have “narcissistic
personality disorder” and
feature “the
syndrome of malignant narcissism”,
“the
syndrome of arrogance” and
“machiavellianism”
and
also traits of “antisocial
personality disorder” and
feature “sadistic
tendencies” within
aggression. This subtype may also feature “pseudostupidity”
which
protects them from any self reflection and may also be part of the
“The
Dark Triad of Borderline Personality Disorder, Vulnerable
“Depressed/Depleted” or Grandiose “Arrogant/Entitled”
Narcissism and Factor 2 Psychopathy”.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The
Impulsive Borderline
(The “dramatic/antisocial”
subtype)
(“The
Witch”,
The defining characteristic of this type of borderline is acting
“sadistic”)
- Histrionic or Antisocial features. Capricious, superficial,
flighty, distractable, seductive; fearing loss, becomes agitated,
gloomy, and irritable.
The
Impulsive Borderline (Witch) tends
to be flirtatious, captivating, charismatic, and elusive. They are
highly energetic thrill-seekers who are easily bored and seem to have
a never ending appetite for attention and excitement. They will often
act without thinking, and the result is chaos for everyone involved.
This type is in constant conflict with society. Bouts of violence are
not uncommon. This subtype may have “antisocial
personality disorder” and
feature “sadism”
and
“machiavellianism”
and/or
traits of “histrionic
personality disorder” or
the disorder/s as co-occurring diagnosis.
The Impulsive Borderline (Witch) is operating in “Abandoned Child schema mode” (pleas for attention), as well as “Angry Child schema mode”. The Angry Child believes that other people deserve to be punished for the borderline's pain, and behaves accordingly.
